Pitru Paksha Begins

Start of the 15/16-day Pitru Paksha — the period dedicated to ancestral offerings (Shraddh, Tarpan, Pinda Daan). Bhadrapada Krishna Pratipada (Amanta), the day after Bhadrapada Purnima — the Pratipada Shraddha; Drik lists the Purnima Shraddha of the day before as the opening of the paksha. Devotees perform daily tarpan; new ventures avoided. Concludes with Mahalaya / Sarvapitru Amavasya.
